Nights to remember, inside Ischia's Aragon Castle!

  1. Sleep in a monk's cell, inside Ischia's Aragon Castle
  2. The delicious Southern Italian and island cuisine
  3. The view of the sea and Ischia Ponte from the terrace

Marvelously majestic, impressively imposing, Ischia's Castello Aragonese is as much part of the history of the island as it's thermal waters and the surrounding sea.

It is within the walls of the magnificent 15th century stronghold, in what was once a monastery, that Albergo Il Monastero is located.

Made for monks

Like the former monastery, today's Hotel Il Monastero is a fascinating labyrinth of corridors, passageways and stairs, all of which sooner or later lead to the hotel's pretty internal courtyards, splendid public rooms and sweeping sea view terraces.

Elegant and, at the same time, essential, the hotel's white, vaulted bedrooms combine modern comfort and the simplicity of what were once the monks' cells to perfection

Each room has a window from where a spectacular view of the sea or the village of Ischia Ponte can be seen. Guests staying in the hotel's two superior rooms enjoy the additional pleasure of a small panoramic terrace.

Life on the terrace

Carved out of the massif castle walls, Albergo Il Monastero's panoramic terrace serves both as outdoor breakfast room, where a delicious breakfast including Il Monastero's legendary cakes is served, and as an enchanting venue for a sunset aperitif.

Eating in the kitchen

In the evening, guests dining at the hotel's "Monastery Kitchen" restaurant are taken on an unforgettable culinary journey, experiencing the authentic flavors of the Mediterranean, in the form of age-old island specialties and typical Southern Italian dishes.

Chef Francesco Tramontano's exceptional cuisine is prepared using the area's abundant fish and seafood, the herbs and organic vegetables grown in the hotel's kitchen gardens, and bread baked in the ancient wood burning oven

Meals are accompanied by an excellent selection of wines, produced on the island of Ischia and beyond.

This place has incredible views and charm everywhere. Their staff are equally charming and helpful. There are a large number of stairs and uphill climbs around the castle. When you arrive (reception is available 24 hours), you can have staff transport your luggage up to the hotel. You can take the elevator up and eliminate the largest portion of the climb up to the hotel. The room is understated. It is small and minimally furnished. Perhaps a queen size bed? If is clean with adequate storage and air conditioning. The ceilings are very high. It is serene and quiet. The views from the balcony room, and all of the common spaces, are amazing. The breakfast is incredible— coffees, juices, breads, salads, meats, cheeses, cakes, fruit, yogurt, etc. Book early and make dinner reservations. The dinner is a tasting menu and the food is incredible. You are booking for the amazing location, incredible staff, and delicious food. To get to shopping, other restaurants, and the bus, you need to cross the narrow pedestrian path back to the main island. Depending on the waves, you could get splashed on a short segment of the walk. You can have a taxi take you to the entrance if you are traveling with luggage (before 8:00 pm).

A mixed experience - fitness required!

The pros: stunning location and views, beautiful design, wonderful kitchen garden The cons: standard rooms are very small (barely 2ft clearance at the base of the bed and nowhere to put a large bag); when we were there the ascensore (elevator) failed and we were left hiking nearly 100 metres vertical up steps to our room in baking heat. This seemed to be a fairly regular occurrence so only book here if you are fit!

Ischia, Castello Aragonese. Here, within the walls of the island's imposing Aragon castle, lies the former Monastery of S. Maria della Consolazione, which today houses Albergo Il Monastero. A hotel in which to experience not only Ischia's thermal water and the sea, but the history of the island too.

From the terraces, the view extends from the village of Ischia Ponte to the foot of the castle, and the port of Ischia, from where to board boats to the nearby island of Procida, Naples, Pozzuoli and, during the summer, Sorrento, Capri and the towns of the Amalfi Coast.
