Ischia Porto

Ischia is the largest of the six towns on the island of Ischia, and is divided into two smaller villages: Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte, separated by a length of road a couple of kilometers long. Ischia Porto is, as its name suggests, where the Ischia port is located and the island's hub for private yachts and public ferries and hydrofoils from Naples (Napoli), Capri, Procida, Sorrento, Positano on the Amalfi Coast and other ports on the coast of Campania. This is the busiest town on the island, and where most restaurants, cafès, bars, shops, and tourist services are located...especially along the main Corso Vittoria Colonna.

How to Get to Ischia Porto

Ischia's main port is connected all year round with Napes (Napoli) and Pozzuoli via regular ferries and hydrofoils that run daily. During the tourist season from the beginning of May through September, there are also direct ferry links with Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi, and Salerno.

The ferry trip by hydrofoil or high-speed ferry from Naples to Ischia Porto takes about an hour, while regular ferries take about 90 minutes.

There are also ports in the towns of Forio and Casamicciola Terme on Ischia, while Lacco Ameno and Sant’Angelo are home to small marinas for private boats.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Is there nightlife in Ischia Porto?

Ischia Porto is the liveliest part of the island after dark, though it is nothing like a major seaside resort. The best-known venue is Valentino Club, one of the island's few proper nightclubs. Along Corso Vittoria Colonna, there are several bars with piano bars and live music. Island tradition calls for ending the night at Bar Calise, an island institution famous for its cornetto. In peak season, nightlife stretches into the early hours; in the low season, it winds down significantly.

Is Ischia Porto good for shopping?

Yes, it has the widest range of shops on the island. Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna have clothing boutiques, ceramics shops, wine stores, souvenir shops, and local produce outlets. Shops stay open late in summer, making post-dinner shopping one of the most pleasant port activities. The Tuesday morning market at Ischia Porto is the island's main weekly market, with fresh local produce, crafts, and clothing. Enoteca Perrazzo on the Riva Destra is the go-to address for rucolino and Ischian wines.

Is it easy to reach the rest of the island from Ischia Porto?

Yes, it is the most convenient starting point for getting around the island. The EAV bus terminal is steps from the pier, with the CS and CD lines reaching all municipalities. Taxis wait at the exit from the ferry arrivals. Scooter and car rental agencies are clustered near the port. Ischia Porto is also the departure point for many organized boat tours to Capri, Procida, and the Amalfi Coast. Ischia Ponte is reachable on foot in 30 minutes; Forio by bus in 25–30 minutes.

Is Ischia Porto a good area to stay in?

Yes, especially for those arriving without a car who want to get around easily. It is the most central part of the island: the bus terminal is steps from the pier, taxis are always available, and shops and restaurants stay open late. It is also the liveliest area; those looking for quiet evenings are better off in Lacco Ameno or Casamicciola. For those who want everything within reach from arrival to departure, Ischia Porto is the most convenient choice.

What beaches are in Ischia Porto?

Ischia Porto has three main beaches. Lido Beach sits behind Via Roma and is the closest to the port, with fine sand and shallow water, ideal for families with children. Pescatori Beach lies halfway between Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte, in a quieter setting. Spiaggia degli Inglesi is near the Sant'Alessandro village, toward Casamicciola. All three alternate free public sections with equipped private lidos offering sunbeds and umbrellas. Despite the proximity to the port, the water is clean.

What is the Riva Destra and why is it the evening meeting point?

The Riva Destra (the right bank of the port) is the liveliest waterfront in Ischia Porto, with a row of bars, venues, and outdoor tables that come alive from aperitivo hour well into the night. It is the island's go-to meeting spot: locals and visitors stop here for a drink while watching the boats and the port. Continuing from the Riva Destra leads to Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna, which turns pedestrian in the evening with shops open late, piano bars, and venues. It is the most frequented evening promenade on the whole island.

Does Ischia Porto have thermal spas or thermal pools?

Ischia Porto does not have its own paid thermal parks, but many hotels in the area have in-house thermal pools. For the best-known parks, Poseidon in Forio, Negombo in Lacco Ameno, and Castiglione in Casamicciola, you need to travel by bus or scooter, a journey of about 20–30 minutes. The proximity to the bus terminal makes Ischia Porto a convenient base for reaching the island's thermal parks even without a car.

Is there anything to do in Ischia Porto in winter?

Ischia Porto in winter doesn't shut down, at least not entirely. Shops, bars, a few restaurants, and essential services stay open year-round, unlike much of the rest of the island. The port runs daily connections to Naples and Pozzuoli. Aragonese Castle is open all year. For thermal baths, the best bet is finding a hotel with an in-house pool open in the low season. It is, in any case, the most practical base for anyone visiting the island in winter.
