Getting to Ischia

As you've probably guessed, the only way to reach Ischia is by sea.

Ferries to Ischia's ports in Ischia Porto, Forio, and Casamicciola Terme depart daily from Naples and Pozzuoli all year round.

During Italy's tourist season from May through September, there are also ferries across the Bay of Naples from Capri, Procida, Sorrento, Amalfi, and Salerno.

How to get to Ischia from Naples

Ferries for Ischia depart from two different piers inside the port of Naples: Calata di Massa and Molo Beverello.
Regular ferries depart from Calata Porta di Massa, and hydrofoil ferries depart from Molo Beverello. There is about 1 kilometer between the two piers, which you can walk or take the free Alibus that connects the piers and airport.

Arriving via the Naples Airport (Capodichino):
  • Bus: The Alibus line from the airport stops at Molo Beverello and Porta di Massa. Tickets cost EUR 5 and can be purchased on board.*
  • Taxi: the taxi stand is directly outside the arrivals gate. Request the fixed fare for the port, EUR 21.
Arriving via the Naples Train Station
  • Metro: line 1, Municipio stop. Walk about 100 meters across Piazza Municipio towards to port.
  • Taxi: the taxi stand is located outside the central station. Request the fixed fare, EUR 15.

If you are driving and want to bring your car to the island, the most convenient port is Pozzuoli.
The ferry ride for high-speed ferries or hydrofoils is about 1 hour; regular ferries take 1.5 hours.

How to get to Ischia from Pozzuoli

Caremar and Medmar ferries depart from the Pozzuoli port, which is particularly convenient for those driving. You can reach the port directly from the Naples ring road (or tangenziale in Italian), exiting at Napoli - Via Campana, without having to take on the city traffic.

From April through October, vehicles registered to residents of the region of Campania (excluding residents of Ischia) are not allowed on Ischia. There are no limits for vehicles of residents of other regions or countries.

It takes about 1.5 hours to reach Ischia from Pozzuoli.

How to get to Ischia from Rome

If you are flying into Rome and need to reach the island of Ischia, you need to connect through Naples and then follow the instructions above.
From Rome's Fiumicino Airport, take the Leonardo Express shuttle train to the Roma Termini central train station, and from here transfer to a train for Naples.
From Rome's Ciampino Airport, there are a number of buses that go to the Rome Termini train station.
Trains to Naples take about 1 hour 10 minutes. Book in advance for discounted tickets.
If you are traveling with family or friends, it might be less expensive to book a private transfer from the airport to the port. The driver meets you at the arrivals gate at the airport and takes you directly to the port, helping you to board the ferry.

How to get to Ischia from Sorrento

From April through September, there is a direct ferry from Sorrento to Ischia and vice versa. There is one departure in the morning and one in the afternoon in both directions.
The Sorrento port is easily reached via the stairs down from Piazza Tasso, or the elevator from Villa Comunale. There are also a number of buses, especially convenient upon return to avoid the climb back up the stairs.
The trip from Sorrento to Ischia takes about an hour and the arrival port is Ischia Porto.

How to get to Ischia from Capri

Ferries between Ischia and Capri run from April to mid-October. During this period, there are a number of departures each morning from Ischia to Capri, and vice versa in the afternoon...perfect for those who are staying on Ischia and want to take a day trip to Capri.
Ferries from Capri to Ischia that depart in the morning and return in the afternoon run only during the months of June, July, and August.
There is only one port on Capri, Marina Grande, where all ferries arrive and depart. The trip takes about 50 minutes.

How to get to Ischia from the Amalfi Coast

From mid-April through September, you can reach Ischia from the Amalfi Coast. The ferry departs from Salerno (Molo Manfredi) and stops at Amalfi, Positano, Capri, and Ischia. The entire trip takes about 3 hours, so we don't recommend a day trip from the Amalfi Coast to Ischia!

Getting around Ischia from the Port

When you arrive at Ischia Porto, you will see a line of taxis and a number of scooter rentals. Turn left and walk uphill to the bus terminal for routes to locations across the island like Ischia Ponte and the Castello Aragonese, Sant'Angelo, Lacco Ameno, Barano (home of the Maronti Beach), and the island's many hot springs and thermal spas like the Negombo and Poseidon thermal parks. The two main routes are the CS and CD (Circolare Sinistra and Circolare Destra) that circle the island in opposite directions. Purchase tickets at the ticket window and don't forget to validate them on the bus!

The closest airport to Ischia is the Naples Capodichino Airport. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the Molo Beverello port by car, where you can catch a ferry to Ischia. There is a heliport on Ischia in Casamicciola Terme to reach the island directly by helicopter.
